Moldavite - substance of meteorite impact
Moldavite (Czech: Vltavin from the Vltava river) is
an olive-green or dull greenish vitreous substance
possibly formed by a meteorite impact. It was
introduced to the scientific public in 1786 as
"chrysolites" from Tyn nad Vltavou in a lecture by
professor Josef Mayer of Prague University. The
term "moldavite" derived from the town of
Moldauthein (Czech: Tyn nad Vltavou) where the
described pieces came from was first used in 1836.
In 1900, F. E. Suess pointed out that the gravel-size
moldavites exhibited curious pittings and wrinkles
on the surface, which could not be due to the
action of water, but resembled the characteristic
markings on many meteorites. Boldly attributing
the material to a cosmic origin, he regarded
moldavites as a special type of meteorite. However,
for a long time, it was generally believed to be a
variety of obsidian. Currently scientists believe
that moldavites were formed about 14,700,000
years ago during the impact of a giant meteorite
in present-day Nordlinger Ries.
99% of all moldavite finds have come from the
South Bohemian localities, 1% were found in
South Moravian localities. Only tens of pieces
were found in the Lusatian area (near
Dresden), Cheb basin area (West Bohemia)
and Northern Austria (near Radessen). The
total amount of Moldavite scattered around
the world is estimated at 275 tons.
There are typically two grades of moldavite:
high quality, often referred to as museum
grade, and regular grade. The regular grade
pieces are usually darker and more saturated
in their green color, and the surface is seen
as closely spaced pitting or weathering. The
museum grade has a distinct fern-like pattern
and is much more translucent than the regular
grade. High-quality moldavite stones are often
used in hand-crafted jewelry and have gained
an almost cult status.

Wafting a breath of perfume and mist...
Svetlana Gaponenko from the city of
Nizhniy Novgorod, Russia, is better known
by her nickname "Needle." Since her
childhood she liked crafting and chose
the profession of a school sewing teacher.
Svetlana have always loved vintage
beaded handbags, cords, tassels, purses,
embroidered naive cute scenes and
flowers. When she was introduced to
seed beads and received some experience,
she decided to learn making such items
and made success!
Svetlana says, "I still remember some
significant moments of my young age: a
trip to Leningrad, the city which is
impossible not to admire. I remember how
I was excited by my mother's brooches
made from the beads produced in
Czechoslovakia, such bright and elegant.
We visited lots of museums and exhibits
where my attention was usually attracted
by fans, shoes and other amazing,
delicate and beautiful feminine "things";
they have always been nice to my heart.
As time went on, I get new hobbies, they
changed, but creativity has always been
with me. My restless nature demanded to
try everything: cross-stitching and
embroidery, different types of knitting,
sewing by hands and on a sewing machine,
paintings and decorating vases, jugs and
photo frames.
My character is like that: if I knit -
I need to knit a lot and different
designs, if I sew - I have to create
clothes I could wear something new in
summer every day. I remember, once
during the Holiday Season shopping fever
I sewed a luxurious evening dress with
gloves and embroidered it with beads.
Yes, that was when I had my first bead
experience! Soon after I got married
and a year later gave birth to my first
daughter.
At Easter, a friend of mine gifted me
a beaded Easter egg. What a delight! I
still don't understand how these
itty-bitty beads could delight me so
much! And, of course, I fell in love
with them... I found an issue of the
Wonderful Moments Magazine with an
eggs embroidery patterns. Long and
hard, I looked into it understanding
nothing neither in terms nor in
description. Twice I've dissolved
almost finished beadwork, but won! It
was like a miracle!
I began search for new patterns and
thanks to that I have developed my
computer skills. Quite by accident,
as it often happens, I found one of
the most popular Russian forums at
that time. My dear friends and
teachers, thank you for your support
and knowledge you share, I've been
learning and "growing" with you for
six years! I've tried to bead lots of
things - decorations and accessories,
flowers and trees. All that my new
friends have picked up and made!
Wonderful work and wonderful people -
delight, delight!.."

New book: Art Without Borders
"Art is the great connector, as proven here
in the stories these seven Eastern European
female artists share about their work, their
immigration experiences, and their acclimation
into American culture.
Victoria Averbukh, of Russian and Jewish
descent, journalist by profession, knows
firsthand what these women have faced, having
come to the United States and raised American
children while successfully keeping their
Russian heritage alive.
These seven artists all work in different
mediums. Their work could not be more
different; however, their shared experiences
create a common thread, weaving their Eastern
European roots into their American lifestyles.
Their work on a whole is vibrant, colorful,
and passionate. Victoria has chosen a group
of women whose stories are as fascinating and
powerful as the work they create. She has
chosen well. Each of them makes the world a
brighter, more beautiful place, and for that,
we all must stand up and applaud!"
