Stone of January: GARNET
Garnet is known as the stone of health - ridding the body of negative
energies and transmuting them to a beneficial state. Also know in the
past as a stone of commitment - to purpose, to others, to oneself.

Sunstone - aventurescence feldspar
Sunstone is a kind of translucent to transparent
feldspar exhibiting bright metallic flashes when
light interacts with tiny plate-like mineral inclusions
within the stone. A brilliant spangled appearance
when sunstone is viewed from certain directions
has led to its use as a gemstone. The optical effect
appears to be due to reflections from inclusions of
red copper.
These inclusions give the stone an appearance
something like that of aventurine, hence sunstone
is known also as "aventurine-feldspar." The
optical effect called "shiller" and the color in
Oregon sunstone is due to copper. The middle
part of this crystal sparkles, and usually the color
is darkest in the middle and becomes lighter
toward the outer edges.
Sunstone was not common until recently. It has
been found in Southern Norway, where masses of
the sunstone occur embedded in a vein of quartz.
Other locations include Lake Baikal area in Siberia,
Australia, Canada, China, Congo, India, Mexico,
Sri Lanka, Tanzania, and several United States
localities: in Pennsylvania, Oregon, North Carolina,
Virginia. Sunstone is the official gemstone of
Oregon.
Sunstone has been known for at least a few
hundred years: sunstone deposits near Lake
Baikal in Russia were mined in the early 1800s,
and deposits in southern Norway were mined
in the late 1800s. The sunstone deposits of
Oregon were discovered by Native Americans
who collected the gems, treasured them, traded
them widely and sometimes buried their dead
with a small bag of stones.
Sunstone is also known as "heliolite" and more
commonly "aventurescent feldspar." It is cut into
cabochons, beads, and small sculptures. The
most transparent pieces are used to produce
faceted stones. Sunstone is popular with
innovative jewelry designers and is especially
popular in the geographic areas where it is
commercially mined. It is not a gemstone that is
seen in every jewelry store, and many jewelry
buyers have never witnessed its aventurescence.
However, once a person is given a demonstration
of sunstone's aventurescence, they often want
to try it and are fascinated.
Some artisans use sunstone for small carvings and
sculptures. Material up to three inches in size has
been found and some of these large stones are used
for carving. Sunstone beads are also popular. As a
bead, sunstone displays aventurescence from both
sides of the included copper platelets.

On dragon wings
Today we have another artist from the Czech
Republic - Denisa Kangas. Born in the city of
Hradec Kralove, that is about 100 kilometers
from Jablonec nad Nisou, the "capital city of
Czech beads", she still lives there with her family.
No wonder that Denisa fell in love with beads
and became a jewelry designer. Her mostly
abstract beadworks, both in beadweaving and
embroidery, are valued by many. So, we also
like them and hope you will too!
Denisa says, "I have always loved art and music,
I play the piano and enjoy drawing and painting.
And even though the Czech Republic is known
for being the "bead kingdom", I was first
introduced to beading in 2009, while visiting
my wonderful mother-in-law Lana in the United
States. Our daughter was then just eight months
old and caring for her didn't leave me with much
time to draw and paint.
I needed something creative to do, something
that I could put aside when my daughter needed
me and then pick up again later. Lana was
enjoying doing beadwork herself and suggested
that I might like it too. I was very excited
about giving it a try! So we went shopping in
the local bead store and I bought my first
stash of beads, needles, fireline, mats, and
books for learning the basic stitches.
I have been beading ever since and the passing
of time has just made me even more excited about
working with beautiful beads. I'm afraid I have
become a beadaholic, I bead as often as my busy
life allows, and I'm looking forward to many
more beading adventures in the future.
I love shopping for beads and I have to admit
that I have more beads than I could possibly use
in my lifetime. But of course that doesn't stop
me from buying more! My stock consists mostly
of seed beads in my favorite colors; purple, teal,
turquoise, copper and gray. There are only a few
baggies of yellow and pink in case I want to
challenge myself by working with colors I don't
normally use.
Participating in the Fashion Colorworks Contest
gives me the opportunity to work outside of my
color comfort zone. I was unable to submit my
entry last year because of difficulties in
coordinating my schedule with my co-author
and beading soul mate, Lea Palickova. I really
love Lea's work and style and I look forward to
working with her more in the future..."

Chamomiles in middle of winter
The Muscovite Elena Vanyukova literally lives in art.
She is a certified musician, violinist, and a painter,
and has tried many kind of crafts. She has been to
many countries from the USA to India on business
and everywhere she learned local culture and
received inspiration. Giving a try to many bead
techniques, Elena creates very nice jewelry and
every piece could be her signature one. Welcome
to our newsletter, Elena!
Elena says, "I loved to draw and mold out of clay.
Well, of course, I've been doing crafts - sewing,
knitting, gluing some things out of paper. At the
time, even the question arose - what to do in life.
Those teachers who were engaged in drawing with
me, pulled me to art school. My teachers in the
music school were sure that I would be a musician.
As a result, the music overpowered. And so, I
am a certified musician, violinist, however,
being out of practice for a long time. Playing
music is a daily exercise, and life was such
that I had to work a lot in different countries,
and I didn't have the possibility of playing
music seriously.
I consider the Gnessin State Musical College my
main professional musical school. And although
I graduated from the Pedagogical Institute as a
music teacher later, Gnessin College left my
principal and loved source of education. The
only advantage of the institute was that it had
the Department of Social Professions where I
attended a course of painting and drawing.
After graduation, the question arose of where
to work. And where I could go with my 1.5 year
old son, if not to the kindergarten as a musician?
My job was really creative! How many my own
event scenarios in verse were written, how many
children's costumes were sewn, I'm not talking
about decorations! I even had to go on courses
and learn how to make paper flowers because I
needed chamomiles for one of the child
performances.
All this happiness lasted until my family (by that
time I already had two sons) left Russia for a
business trip to America. That ended my creative
work for many years. While there, I sewed
costumes for my children for the holidays and
they looked so handsome in my clothes! At
that time I didn't know anything about beads
and even could not imagine that ever beads
would become everything to me and fully take
my soul..."
