Benitoite - world rarest gemstone

Benitoite is one of the world rarest gemstones, it's a relatively new gemstone, and was first described in 1907 by George D. Louderback, who named it benitoite for its occurrence near the headwaters of the San Benito River in San Benito County, California. Large crystals of benitoite are very rare, and they are usually preserved as mineral specimens. Therefore, gemstones of benitoite are almost always very small, rarely exceeding two carats. Benitoite typically occurs with an unusual set of minerals, along with minerals that make up its host rock. Frequently associated minerals include: natrolite, neptunite, joaquinite, serpentine and albite.

The gemstone possesses many unique qualities. Benitoite gemstones have usually sapphire-blue and violet color, but can range from colorless to dark blue, and can have very good transparency and luster. It has a high index of refraction and a dispersive power higher than that of diamond, making the stone extraordinarily bright and fiery when cut properly. Benitiote has a rare 5 pointed crystal form, and an even rarer 6 pointed form, "star of David", with about 24 samples known.

Benitoite occurs in a number of sites including the states of California and Arkansas and also Japan, but gemstone quality material has only been found in San Benito County, California. The deposit there is no longer actively producing benitoite, thereby adding to the scarcity of this gemstone. In 1985 benitoite was named as the official state gem of California. The largest 7.83 carat weight crystal is stored in the Smithsonian Museum in Washington, DC.

Benitoite is not a typical gemstone, and is mostly reserved for collectors and connoisseurs of exquisite gemstone. It is most often cut in round or oval cuts, though it is not usually seen in jewelry items. Although Benitoite is a valuable and exquisite gemstone, its hardness as a gemstone is relatively low and it is therefore prone to scratching. Due to its rarity and lack of availability, benitoite can be extremely expensive per carat. Although benitoite can resemble other gemstone such as sapphire, iolite, and tanzanite, its origin is usually enough to identify it without it getting confused with other gemstones.

Fashion Colorworks 2015. Olga Barannikova

Olga Barannikova, Belgorod, Russia
Fashion Colorworks 2015
Second Place Winner in Beaded Jewelry Category
for Midsummer Nights Dream Necklace

Olga says, "I remember when I was a kid my friends and I collected priceless "treasures" - beads from mothers' and grandmothers' torn necklaces, or found on the street, or donated by someone. All treasures were carefully placed to the boxes and kept as the apple of the eye, and only the closest ones were allowed to see this handful of beads.

Slowly passion for collecting and contemplation subsided, but a great desire to create beautiful things appeared. The fact that something different from plain strands can be done from beads did not even occur into my head and all my creative energy was directed to another peaceful direction: for example, my mother taught me to crochet, cross-stitch embroidery and knit.

For a long time I've been working hard and fruitfully making macrame and my whole apartment was stuffed with woven pockets, plant pots, murals, magazine racks and so on. I've switched from one type of craft to another many times without stopping. Studying at the University (I learned physics and mathematics at the Belgorod State University) temporarily got me out from creative exploration.

I enthusiastically studied and the student's time left no time for handwork, but then I wanted to do that with double power. And once again I was running in a circle making embroidery, knitting and macrame, until one day when I decided to marry. The search for a wedding dress was pleasant and tedious and everything was ready except jewelry...

What was offered in stores, I absolutely didn't like. The situation was saved when my future husband brought me to the website www.biserland.ru with online bead school beaded and many beadwork photos. Then, in 2002, for me it was an incredible discovery that beading meant not only stringing! Based on the pictures and without any tutorials and patterns, I wove a small wedding necklace and earrings. Then, 13 years ago, my first beadwork seemed a real masterpiece!

I wore this wedding jewelry and officially entered the virtual beading school. Over half of the lessons I was a good student properly working all tasks. And then a creative hunger began - I felt what has been given in the school was too little, so I was looking for anything that was associated with beading: books, magazines, patterns, tutorials, beadwork photography, etc. At that time I was highly impressed by jewelry of Angelica Susoenkova, her beadwork was my source of inspiration and I still respect her dedication to beading..."

Fashion Colorworks 2015. Kaori Nakakohji

Bead artist Kaori Nakakohji

Kaori Nakakohji, Nara, Japan
Fashion Colorworks 2015
Second Place Winner in Finished Jewelry Category
for Aqua Trickle Necklace

Kaori says, "Since my childhood, I like creative work and crafts making all kinds of things and when I was 15 I started learning drawing and painting. After high school graduation, I enrolled at Japanese University with major of Arts of Visual Communication Design.

From a young age I like watching movies, especially Sci-Fi, Fantasy and Horror ones; I admire with those creations which never existed in the real world and would love to become a special effects makeup artist. That was the reason I moved to Los Angeles, California where I entered the program for master makeup and special effects.

After finishing my studies and getting a diploma I began working as a freelance film makeup artist and also as a graphic designer. In a few years, I moved to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia where I've lived and worked for many years, and then returned to my home country. So, when I'm asked about my source of inspiration, I say that it comes from all my experience and everything fascinating me as well.

Having a rich creative experience, however, I've never tried to design and make jewelry until several years ago. I received the first push in that when I saw a beautiful lampwork piece I found in a bead shop in Malaysia. It was really amazing, but I had no idea what to do with it, so I went to the closest bookstore and started searching for making jewelry and accessories.

In Malaysia there were so many books about handmaking from all over the world! That got me excited and interested, especially in wirework. I began buying beads and making accessories using artistic wire and enjoyed with my new hobby. Unfortunately, in some time I became very busy and couldn't spend much time for handmade anymore, but in 2014 passion for crafting returned to me!

When searching for custom jewelry in the Internet, I came across soutache embroidery. The moment when I found and saw first pieces of soutache jewelry was really shocking, I was amazed to see such a unique and beautiful jewelry which I've never seen before. I totally had no idea of how to create that jewelry, but I knew this was what I was looking for..."

Fashion Colorworks 2015. Tatiana Mankova

Tatiana Mankova, Rostov-on-Don, Russia
Fashion Colorworks 2015
Second Place Winner in Beaded Objects and Accessories
for At The Dawn Bonsai Clock

That is not the first Tatiana's victory, she has entered Fashion Colorworks in 2013 and won Best in Contest Runner-up and First Place in Beaded Jewelry category, in 2014 - and won Best Use of Preciosa Traditional Czech Beads Award, this year - and Tatiana won again!

Frankly speaking, it's hard to meet an artist working with beads in combination with such different materials. Tatiana uses the widest range of beading techniques and makes jewelry and accessories of many styles. Tatiana says, "I choose the ones that are more appropriate in a particular case, in terms of expressiveness, convenience and easy to personal likings. For example, I can make embroidery, knit, weave on a loom or with wire, once fond of micro-macrame, etc., and I can use them all if needed."

When we asked Tatiana why she has entered Fashion Colorworks, she said, "You suggest very stimulating mix of fairly hard-coded limit in color with virtually complete freedom in everything else. Good organization, simplicity and affordability of participation (no need to deal with mail and customs), and very talented multi-style participants from around the world, "delicious" prizes. Lots of pleasure!" We hope next year Tatiana will participate in Fashion Colorworks again!
