Verdite - Serpentine-like stone

Verdite is the trade name for a light to dark-green, yellowish-green, bluish-green or brownish ornamental stone composed of fuchsite and clayey material dating back 3500 million years ago. Since verdite is a rock rather than a mineral, it doesn't have a definite chemical composition. Verdite is also known as Budstone or African Jade. It often has spots or a swirled appearance, a vitreous, silky or pearly luster and is translucent to opaque.

Verdite was discovered in North Kaap River, South Africa in areas where gold was found; it is a rare, exotic and wonderful stone of rare quality. The most significant verdite deposits are found in Zimbabwe. Though verdite is also found in the Transvaal region of South Africa, there is no other deposit of comparable quality anywhere in the world than in Zimbabwe.

Verdite has been used by South African native ancient tribesmen for hundreds of years as an ornamental stone and for amulets and was also crafted into jewelry. Verdite is often cut into cabochons, beads and spheres. It is also tumbled and often used for inlay. Verdite is frequently carved into animal or human forms as works of African art. The stone is rarely faceted and not usually treated or enhanced in any way.

In the knowledge that verdite is found only in Southern Africa and noting in particular that only Zimbabwe verdite has a uniquely high quality it is being sought after by international art collectors and investors who have quickly recognized it as a rare and intrinsically worthy material. That is the reason why verdite art works have the double attraction of beauty and a special value. Because it is a quickly diminishing resource the passage of time can only enhance this attraction.

Fashion Colorworks 2017 Beading Contest

Very soon, on April 1 we'll start getting Fashion Colorworks 2017 submissions! Many of you still work on your beauties, and some people email us and ask to explain the idea of using colors in the Fashion Colorworks contest. The rule says, "A participant has to create a piece with the predominant colors of one of the suggested triads (any shades of those colors)." It means that the colors of a triad MUST dominate in a contest piece.

It's possible to use the shades of them to complement a design. It's also possible to use other colors if they don't distract one's attention (and of course, a juror's attention) from the main three colors. In general, more than three colors is pretty hard to implement, that's why we suggest only three and claim participants and jurors to focus on them. We wish you best of luck!

Fashion Colorworks 2016. Zuzana Hampelova Valesova

Zuzana Hampelova Valesova, Trutnov, Czech Republic
Fashion Colorworks 2016
Third Place Winner in Finished Jewelry Category
for Rosaleen Necklace

Zuzana says, "I like making all kinds of jewelry - from easy beadwoven earrings and rings to difficult and time-consuming necklaces. In this short article I want to introduce you to my creative process on the example of several beadworks I made the last year, I'd love to show you some special pieces which I like the most.

The first one is my Rosaleen Necklace; that piece you could see among Fashion Colorworks 2016 contest winners and here I want to thank jurors and the others -for the 3rd place in the Finished Jewelry category.

At first, I thought I wouldn't be able to finish this piece until deadline because I haven't had as much time as I needed to not be nervous. I wanted to make this necklace elegant and romantic. I used a lot of different materials: glass, textile, ceramic, acrylic and a little bit was afraid of that fact but now I believe it wasn't bad decision.

For sure, the biggest project I made in 2016 was Eugenia necklace. This soutache and beads piece was designed for the Battle of the BeadSmith and I really loved every hour I spent on it. This old soutache necklace was inspired by another big hobby of mine - genealogy, by my Granny and all vintage things she used to have in her home.

Every moment when I looked at my necklace I felt the smell of old times, so that's it, my Eugenia! The Sophie Necklace was made for contest organized by the club of beaders in my home country - Czech Republic. The theme was about all things associated with the 19th century, so I designed my entry looking like very old and classical jewel with pearls.

I like collections of jewels and sometimes I create several pieces of the same pattern in many color combinations. Those necklaces-wreaths are the example of such approach. I like them, they are simple, gentle, flowery, and romantic; I made them all during summer of 2016..."

Fashion Colorworks 2016. Ksenia Ivanova

Ksenia Ivanova, Taganrog, Rostov region, Russia
Fashion Colorworks 2016
Second Place Winner in Beaded Objects And Accessories Category
for Forest Dragon Nest Lamp

Ksenia says, "Crafts in my view of the world is a completely natural thing because I grew up in amazing costumes and hats that my mother have knitted for me. Honestly, I still don't recognize purchased sweaters - only the creations of my mother's hands! I was very lucky in the fact that as a child, I played with the dolls with my mother.

When the Barbie-like dolls started the magazine "Lola" appeared on the newsstands; it published not only pictures and patterns of clothing, but also articles about other types of craft, there I saw the first beadwork patterns. I do not recall there were the names of the techniques and bead items were offered to make for the dolls, but since I was very fond of jewelry I've tried to adapt them for myself.

When I was ten years old, the beaded baubles reigned were in fashion. They were tied directly on the hand and the number of them was worn at the same time was difficult to count: from the wrist up to the elbow! I was pretty practical and reasonable, so I wove only two bracelets from beads which I managed to get, and never wore them together.

Just think, right now these bracelets, which are still kept in my jewelry box, are twenty-two years! What results can be achieved, if I've constantly beaded all that time! But my interest in beading was spontaneous - from time to time I've made for myself jewelry pieces inspired by samples from books and magazines like "Wonderful Moments" and "Fashion": necklaces and bracelets with mounted elements, and the abundance of denim clothes which I didn't take off was very appropriate to decorate with beads and sequins embroidery.

3. Tell us please how and when did you learn about beading?

After graduation I considered myself already knowing something about crafts, but was very happy that my work will not be associated with arts and crafts because I had a brief and not very successful experience in commission work during my university student time. At one of the exhibitions of local artists I first saw the trees made using beads, and it seemed to me that this is the area of something incredibly time-consuming. But one of my LiveJournal friends has announced that she wrote a tutorial on the beaded trees which proved that 11 trees per month - it's easy to make.

Of course I was very interested and even now I still cannot imagine such a high "speed" of "growing" plants from beads the most important thing turned out to be different. The author, Anna Corr, unfortunately, little known among beadweavers, became a person who inspired a new level of my creativity. I could not even imagine that my non-indifference to nature ever lead me to the second place in the Beaded Objects and Accessories category in the international competition!.."

Haute couture with beads: The fashion designer, who died in 1995, was the opposite of a minimalist: He loved pomp and color. It's no wonder, as he came from Arles in Provence (France), a region also known for the grandeur of its traditional costumes and vibrantly-colored fabrics.
