Vesuvianite named after Mount Vesuvius

Vesuvianite, also known as idocrase, is a green, brown, yellow, or blue silicate mineral. It was first identified and named by the famous German gemologist Abraham Gottlob Werner in 1795 after Mount Vesuvius (hence its name) where fine brown in color crystals of the mineral were found in the ejected limestone blocks. Several other names have been applied to this species, one of which, "idocrase" was given by R. J. Haiiy in 1796. The name "idocrase" comes from Greek words meaning "mixed form", in reference to the crystals showing a mixture of other mineral forms.

Idocrase is an older synonym sometimes used for gemstone-quality vesuvianite. Italy contains numerous localities that have produced exceptional vesuvianite. A sky bluish variety known as cyprine has been reported from Norway and New Jersey, USA; the blue is due to impurities of copper. Californite is a name sometimes used for jade-like vesuvianite, also known as California jade, American jade or vesuvianite jade. Xanthite is a manganese rich variety.

Wiluite is an optically positive variety from the Wilui (Vilyui) River Basin, Yakutia, Russia, it was discovered in the 1990s. Wiluite was previously regarded as a variety of vesuvianite, but is now considered a distinct mineral species. Other sources of vesuvianite include China, Switzerland, Pakistan, and Mexico. Although many species of vesuvianite are dull and uninteresting, there are some highly lustrous and brilliantly-colored forms of this mineral that are outstanding especially the multicolored varieties that came from the Quebec, Canada.

Attractive-looking crystals are sometimes cut as gemstones, but transparent specimens that can be faceted are extremely rare. Most gem-quality vesuvianite is opaque with an appearance similar to jade. The opaque specimens have a greasy or resinous luster, while the rare transparent form has a vitreous luster. Recent finds in Kenya and Tanzania have brought some very fine stones to the market, albeit in limited quantity. One source of cabochon grade material is California, USA.

First Place Winner in Beaded Jewelry Category
for Mistress Of Copper Mount: Enchanted Glade Necklace

Svetlana says, "My fascination with designing jewelry began about ten years ago. Then the "Bijou" magazine started publishing patterns and tutorials and some of the works seemed interesting to me, and I made one piece, then another, the third... and was drawn! At first, I used little of small beads in my beadwork, only as an auxiliary material, the main preference was given to the large ones.

But gradually, as soon as the Czech and then Japanese beads appeared in stores, the priorities changed to diametrically opposite. I think the color palette of small beads is wider, not to mention the areas of their usage. You can create things that look like real plants or animals from them. I love to weave leaves and flowers from beads and I have achieved certain success in this matter for which I'm especially grateful to all people associated with the Fashion Colorworks contest.

I was born and live in the small city of Pervouralsk, in the Sverdlovsk region in the Urals, 40 kilometers from the regional center. Our city is located on the 60th meridian, exactly on the border of Europe and Asia, - yes, yes, the border passing through our city is the most correct!

As early as 1829, the well-known German scientists A. Humboldt and G. Rose visited the Urals in the vicinity of Mount Berezovo near the village of Talitsa (today it's the suburb of Pervouralsk) and setup the border between Europe and Asia on the pass from the western slope of the Ural Mountains to the eastern slope.

At this place in 1837, in connection with the passage of the heir to the Russian royal throne, the first obelisk "Europe-Asia" in the Urals was installed. The adventurous guides from the regional center are driving the trustful tourists to another place near Yekaterinburg and call it "the border between Europe and Asia" - but that is their fantasy..."

Fashion Colorworks 2017. Kaori Nakakohji

Bead artist Kaori Nakakohji

Kaori Nakakohji, Nara, Japan
Fashion Colorworks 2017
First Place Winner in Finished Jewelry Category
for Feather Necklace

Kaori says, "Since 2014, I have journeyed into making soutache embroidery and participated in all kinds of contests to challenge myself to improve my skills. 2017 is my third year in a row when I took part in one of my favorites - Fashion Colorworks Beading Contest.

Getting this contest experience, I am able to work with very interesting color combinations which I could never imagine before and indeed, I discover new ideas. Each year I'm very excited to wait for the Fashion Colorworks triads announcement featuring "the colors of the year".

In 2017 I chose the combination that I at once fell in love with. Those colors reminded me of a beautiful bird named "Lilac-breasted roller". Hence, a necklace reassembling the symbol of this creature was designed.

Nature is absolutely beautiful and I have so many things to learn from. Since I was a child, I have really loved to view book pictures of animals, birds and so on because it gave me joy and inspiration. In these circumstances I felt relaxation and new ideas have come to me from this natural beauty. Thanks to cutting-edge technologies, now we can easily look through amazing photos and images in social networks.

My "Feather" necklace consists of repeating elements. In my opinion, creating such a design is a simple approach because it allows you "to clean" the design and can cause very strong impact towards people. So, I tried to implement this idea by creating several designs and linking those using colors..."

Fashion Colorworks 2017. Anastasia Kulakova

Anastasia Kulakova, Novosibirsk, Russia
Fashion Colorworks 2017
First Place Winner in Beaded Objects And Accessories Category
for The Abyss Handbag

Anastasia says, "Three years have passed since my first participation in the Fashion Colorworks contest where my work took the prize at once, and since my work and I were presented to the general public in the August issue of MyLovelyBeads newsletter. After that my fate has made me a wonderful gift - my lovely daughter, which I have long dreamed of.

To be honest, with my extremely active little girl there has been very little time for beading creativity, but it was impossible to give up everything. My hands themselves looked for the threads, needles and treasured bags with beads; since Fashion Colorworks is the main summer holiday for me I always try to take part in it.

Over time, I finally realized that I was more attracted to the design and creation of accessories like purses rather than jewelry, and I almost completely switched to make them though creating handbags takes more time.

As to the beading techniques, I remained faithful to the bead embroidery, but I often add woven elements to my beadworks. I am very pleased that there are a lot of new materials in the stores that make it possible to embody even the most daring imaginations.

When working on accessories, it is very interesting for me to set challenging tasks. For example, I was interested in making the spherical shape of the Armageddon Handbag using only beaded embroidery without any rigid base.

Also I really wanted to make the "fire" from seed beads as realistic as possible, so that it could resemble a live flame. Not the first time, but I succeeded. This handbag still remains one of my favorite beadworks..."
