Axinite - rare group of silicates
Axinite is a rare group of silicate
minerals that usually occur in long,
flat, axe- or spatula-shaped crystals.
The name "axinite" was derived in
1787 from a Greek word meaning "axe".
All members of axinite mineral group
share the same crystal system, and
have slightly different compositions.
Axinite color varies from lilac
to violet and from brown to reddish
brown depending on its composition,
but most axinite gemstones occur with
a golden brown color.
Axinite is one of the few gemstones
that possess a unique feature known
as pleochroism (capability to display
a variety of colors depending on the
light and angle from which they are
viewed). When a polished crystal of
axinite is rotated, different colors
are displayed. Axinite is a very
popular gemstone among mineral
collectors due to its rarity and
unusual crystal structure and crystal
shapes, and pleochroism.
Axinite gemstones develop and form
within cavities and veins of granite.
Some of the finest Axinite crystals
have come from France, Switzerland,
England, Brazil, Mexico, USA, Sri
Lanka, Pakistan and Tanzania, Japan,
Australia, Canada. Russia has
produced exceptionally well-formed,
large transparent crystals in the
Urals. Also in Russia is the famed
locality of Dalnegorsk, Primorskiy
Kray, which has produced distinct,
pointy aggregates of axinite.
Axinite almost always has inclusions
and eye-clean specimens are very
rare. Axinite has a vitreous luster
when cut and polished. Axinite is
typically faceted and not cut en
cabochon, unlike smoky quartz, which
can closely resemble axinite.
Traditional cuts like oval, round,
pear and cushion are most popular,
but since axinite is relatively
rare and unheard of, fancy shapes
such as trillions and hearts are
hard to find due to limited demand.

Fashion Colorworks 2017. Elena Korpacheva
Elena Korpacheva, Moscow, Russia
Fashion Colorworks 2017
Second Place Winner in Beaded Jewelry Category
for
Alice Necklace
Elena says, "When I started writing
about myself, my first thought was, "Where
does this craving for creativity come from?"
And I immediately remembered my mother. She
sewed, knitted, embroidered, tatted, etc.
Crafting for her was like a need to breathe.
She did not imagine her life without creativity -
even when watching TV, she always had needles
in her hands. It's no wonder that her little
daughter absorbed it all like a sponge.
I learned about beads in 2009 being already an
adult woman. I passed weaving of baubles and
small creatures and immediately plunged into
the world of serious beadwork. I still keep my
first necklace - it's a simple netting
embroidered with pearls, but until now my debut
work causes a rush of warm feelings
( photo ).
The first year of my new hobby flew by almost
unnoticed, and then there was a break for two
years, when I completely forgot about beads
and the boxes with bags of beads, threads and
needles just disappeared from my field of
vision. I do not even remember what caused
such a long break, as well as what served as
my return to the wonderful magic world of
beads. But this time small itty-bitty beads
took me into their captivity forever.
When I create my work, I "draw" it in my head.
Yes, yes! Strangely enough, but for me it's a
big problem is to draw something. To make a
sketch of a future work is definitely not for
me. The biggest thing I'm capable of is to
make an easiest sketch just to identify the
key elements. That is all... This is the
maximum... And already from here I slowly
begin to "dance", "spinning in the dance."
My favorite technique at the moment is beaded
embroidery (necklaces "Glee at the beginning
of summer", "The last days of the departing
summer").
A very big problem for me was, is and still
remains a sense of proportion in using the
bead color palette. It's very difficult to
stop. There is such a big variety of beads
that the hands themselves are drawn to the
new colors and I am always afraid to
overload the work in color content. It was
this problem that prompted my interest in
the Fashion Colorworks contest and I began
to observe the color triads of the contest.
Three colors!!! "This is the limitation,
the framework that I need," I told myself..."

Fashion Colorworks 2017. Elena Miklush
Elena Miklush, Moscow, Russia
Fashion Colorworks 2017
Second Place Winner in Finished Jewelry Category
for
Australian Motifs Necklace
Elena says, "Five years have passed since my
first participation in the Fashion Colorworks
contest, and I can sum up. At least,
intermediate results. I would definitely like
to mention things that are unchanging and
encouraging: a favorite contest is still live
and attracts interest from participants and
fans; every year it gives beautiful color
combinations and new original beadworks! The
contest forces all participants to grow - we
have to always look for new forms and original
designs.
If five years ago the art of micro-macrame
was still a wonder, now it has many new
admirers. The artists try different designs
and techniques, nevertheless, in a broad
sense, jewelry "made from threads" are rather
an attribute of the popular Boho style. My
goal was to go beyond this style, and the
last five years I dedicated to creating
beaded micro-macrame items that create a mood.
This can be, for example, unusual accessories.
Suspenders - it turned out that you can create
a complete image with them. In this case, I
was inspired by the architecture of
Friedensreich Hundertwasser,
an Austrian artist and architect.
His buildings
are like part of nature, they do not have the
same windows and doors, they have uneven
floors and walls, trees on the roofs and
balconies, and the colors are rich and simple.
And here is the result - the suspenders turned
out bright and memorable
( photo 1 ).
Another fashion accessory I recently created
was the epaulette. I made a brooch for it in
micro-macrame, but the epaulette itself was
woven from the cord
( photo 2 ).
I try to combine different techniques and
materials in my work, this opens up new
possibilities and allows me to expand the
boundaries of creativity..."

Fashion Colorworks 2017. Elena Potanina
Elena Potanina, Stamford, CT, USA
Fashion Colorworks 2017
Second Place Winner in Beaded Objects And Accessories Category
for
The House Where... Dreamcatcher
Elena says, "In
general, it's unusual to write about
myself, because I'm a journalist by
profession - that is a person who asks
questions to others, and he himself
remains behind the scenes. Therefore,
I will be brief: Elena Potanina,
Stamford, Connecticut, USA.
And now let me start about beading.
Beadwork is my passion and the parallel
Universe. When I was twelve years old,
there was a rampant trend for woven
"baubles" among my classmates. Then
everybody, but me, was carried away by
the Pokemon, but I seriously fell in
love with beading and this does not let
me go until now, whatever happens in my
life. I'm finishing school - and weave.
I study at the university - and weave.
I got married - and wove. I work in
the newspaper - and weave. I went on
maternity leave... well, here weaving
is a sacred matter already, and you
have correctly understood everything.
And then there was my spontaneous
relocation from Siberia to the USA. I
couldn't continue journalistic career
at the proper level, but I can easily
weave and embroider. Therefore, about
a quarter of the kitchen cabinets and
drawers in my house are now taken by
my bead treasures.
Sometimes it seems
to me that they are plotting to further
seize the territory, and I have nothing
to do with it. Materials - this is what
inspires me and admires me: Miyuki
beads, smooth and uniform, a variety of
Czech beads, glittering faces of the
Swarovski crystal elements, gimp,
Italian sequins, and beautiful stones.
I often fall in love with colors and
their combinations, so the idea of the
Fashion Colorworks contest so bribed
me. In 2017, I could not resist the
fascination of the triad with Lapis Blue
and Hazelnut shades. I love coffee with
the aroma of hazelnuts, and this played
an important role in choosing a correct
combination! And after the coffee
associations, the idea to create a work
on the motives of Mariam Petrosyan's
book "The house that..." came to me..."
